Barr Mansion Wedding: Bethany & Rick

Updated: Apr 5

It's summer of 2020 and weddings look a lot different but on this August day at the Barr Mansion, everything was alright.

Originally built in 1898, the historic walls of this Barr Mansion home have seen over a century's worth of change. It wasn't until early 2000s that the current owners built upon the land where the Barr Mansion stands, adding to it a farmstead and ballroom to host events and weddings. According to the owner, some of the timber pillers that are errected in the ball room are from trees that stood when Christopher Colombus first landed in the Americas. Perhaps you're not much of a history buff, but it doesn't take a history buff to appriciate the beauty that Barr Mansion offers. Florishing garden space that seems to be green year round and the ballroom that bring the outdoors inside, Barr Mansion is a picturesque place to have a wedding and our bride and groom, Bethany & Rick made it the place for thier nuptials.

I am re-writting this Barr Mansion blog almost a full year later, and to this day, and multiple weddings later, this weddings is one of my favorite. At risk of coming across as selfish, Idealistically, I want every couple who's wedding coverage I am overseeing to have a relaxing time. Wedding days are not the time to be planning and preparing last minute details, making final calls for decisions that had been put off, and certainly not putting out fires or meltdowns. Like a ship that's left the doc, Wedding days are a time to open the sails and let all the planning and preparation naturally unfold. There might be a thing or two that doesn't pan out the way it did on the blueprint, but it takes a emotionally intellegent person to let go of the anxiety that a controlling temperment brings and enjoy the day no matter what. It takes keen and intentional focus on the true matter of a wedding day. You and your best friend finally coming together to make a solomn vow before loved ones as you take one another in love and commitment.

May I show you the results of a Bride who did all of the above? Can I affirm to you, reader, that behind these images there was no prompting or pretending, that all the emotion you see was real and authentic. I will also be truthful and tell you that behind these images was a timeline that was greater than 30 minutes behind schedule, a house full of little girls that wanted to tell one hundred stories to Bethany about the bugs and flowers they could see out the window, a frantic family memeber, and a jumbled out-of-the-ordinary timeline created to avoid the hot and humid midday sun. And still, Bethany and Rick were unphased, smooth sails, and easy going despite the chaos. You see, what made all the difference was that Bethany and Rick chose to focus on the heart of the matter, which for them were the people in attendance, and of course their union. The couple was a wedding away from moving to Oklahoma together leaving their families behind.

Bethany told me a week before the wedding that she wanted my focus as a photographer to be on people and moment before anything else. As a documentary & storytelling photographer at heart, it was a relief worth crying over to hear those words. This style of coverage is my calling, my service to my clients and to have a bride want the very thing that aligns with my photography heart, well now, maybe you can understand how and why this wedding is still my favorite after a year.
